A stamp for ceramic business cards: a logo in clay within two days

Dom Sztuki Żar makes ceramic business cards for the medical company NextGen Health and needed a tool that would press the logo into clay repeatably. A PNG became a vector, the vector became a parametric stamp model, and the printer produced two parts with no supports. Two days passed between the studio visit and the finished stamp.

Problem

The logo existed only as a PNG with a gradient. The ECG line in the mark is thin, the NextGen Health signature has small letters with counters, and both clay and FDM printing have their own resolution: relief that is too thin disappears, a counter that is too small fills in. The stamp had to be mirrored, comfortable in the hand, ready for a run of cards and delivered on Wednesday, two days after the order.

Outcome

The stamp was delivered two days after the order. The impressions in clay are clean, including the NextGen Health signature that was borderline legible at the start. We keep the source files, so a reprint or a stamp with a different logo is a one-day job.

  1. 01Studio visit: an impression of roughly 7 x 5 cm, relief depth, the type of clay and how the stamp is pressed. Logo proportions unchanged.
  2. 02Vectorisation: the PNG traced into curves, cleaned up, thin strokes thickened by 0.15 mm, mirrored to DXF and SVG. The mirroring was checked in a section so the impression reads correctly in clay.
  3. 03A parametric model from a script: a 3 mm plate with a 1.5 mm straight-walled relief and a fin handle on a foot, glued into a recess in the back. 70 and 80 mm variants, a version without the signature and a test coupon of the signature alone.
  4. 04FDM printing in two parts, both flat and without supports: the plate relief-up at 0.08 to 0.12 mm layers, the handle foot-down on the bed. PLA, about 20 g in total. CA glue.
  5. 05Impression test in clay at the studio and delivery on time. After the first batch of cards the studio sent photos of the impressions.
